Dog’s Purpose ~ From a 6 Year Old

ShareBeing a veterinarian, I had been called to examine a ten-year-old Irish Wolfhound named Belker. The dog’s owners, Ron, his wife Lisa, and their little boy Shane, were all very attached to Belker, and they were hoping for a miracle. I examined Belker and found he was dying of cancer. I told the family we couldn’t do anything for Belker, and offered to perform the euthanasia procedure for the old dog in their home. As we made arrangements, Ron and Lisa told me they thought it would be good for six-year-old Shane to observe the procedure as they felt that Shane might learn something from the experience. The next day, I felt the familiar catch in my throat as Belker’s family surrounded him. Shane seemed … Continue reading

Don’t Quit….Never Give Up

ShareEvery once in awhile,  someone we know says something that catches our attention in a way that moves our soul. Today is one of those for me, and perhaps these thoughts and words from the heart of a fellow human being may touch yours; “Everywhere I turn, I see and hear people relaying messages of frustration and sadness. I currently have friends fighting the fight of their lives with cancer and other ailments. I have friends who are going through the pains of loss in relationships, friendships, work, self esteem and so much more. So it got me thinking… again. Sometimes it’s really hard to remember this. Harder for some of us than others, and especially hard for me at times. For as we grow … Continue reading

Feed the Right Emotion ~ John Maxwell

ShareFEED THE RIGHT EMOTION In life, both faith and fear will arise within you, and you will choose which one will prevail. Someone once wrote; Two natures beat within my breast, The one is foul, the other blessed. The one I love, the other I hate; The one I feed will dominate. The thing is, both of those emotions will always be present in you. The emotion you continually feed is the one that will dominate your life. You can’t expect fear simply to disappear. If you continually focus on your fears, entertain them, and give in to them, they will increase. The way to ultimately overcome them is to starve them. Don’t give your fears any of your time or energy. Don’t feed them … Continue reading

Eckhart Tolle ~ New Earth

Share“As the new consciousness emerges, some people will feel called upon to form groups that reflect the enlightened consciousness. Dissolving the human ego by bringing it into the light of awareness–this will be one of the main purposes of these groups, whether they be enlightened businesses, charitable organizations, schools, or communities of people living together. Enlightened collectives can be a vortex for consciousness that will accelerate the planetary shift.”~ Eckhart Tolle “A New Earth is one of the most profound pieces of work ever written.  No matter how many times I immerse myself in these teachings, I hear things I’ve never heard before or hear things in a different way. 😉 This piece on collective ego is profound… where Tolle talks about large groups that … Continue reading

Ted Williams – “The Man With The Golden Voice”

ShareHe came bursting into our living rooms, on our computers, and on our cell phones. It was January, 2011, and a roving news reporter with a camera noticed a disheveled homeless man holding a sign asking for financial help. The sign included a hand-written statement advertising his radio voice. The reporter took a chance, gave the man some money, and asked him to give an example of his voice. He caught it all on camera. Today, than ONE video has been viewed 20 MILLION times around the world. Within days, the homeless man was flooded with job offers, financial aid, requests for interviews, and appeared live on the Today show with Matt Lauer. And then the bottom fell out. Not long after the media sensation … Continue reading

ShareThe following article, taken in it’s entirety in original form from the Huffington Post, was written by a friend of mine, Mr. Dennis Merritt Jones, Award-winning author, Keynote speaker, and spiritual mentor. Passion & Humility

ShareYou want passion in your life? You want ownership of everything you’ve ever dreamed of, including love? Stop talking about it and start taking action. No one ever promised life would be a cake walk. To want, that’s just desire. It’s knowing WHAT you want and what you’re willing to sacrifice to get it. It’s waking up every day and when your feet hit the floor or out the door, the whole world says; “Holy crap! You mean business!” You’re on a mission and you won’t take no for an answer. All those struggles and heartache to get there? It’s all worth it. Every second of it. So take hold of it, shake it, and stir it up, because life isn’t a dress rehearsal. It’s … Continue reading

What I Have Learned

Share“I have learned many things in this short life of mine. I’ve learned that no matter what happens in day-to-day life, nor how bad or unfair it may seem, life goes on, that tomorrow brings a brand new day filled with new hope. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your mom and dad, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I’ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. I’ve learned that I have the ability to encourage others to shine their brightest light even in their darkest hour. I’ve learned that inspiring others whenever possible is the greatest gift one can receive. I’ve learned that every day you should be grateful for the opportunities … Continue reading

You Are the Narrator of Your Life

ShareRecently a good friend of mine, Laura Barrette Shannon, author of “Be Happy Now, Simple Steps for Enjoying Life”, and page owner of the same name, shared something on her Facebook page that hit home in so many ways. It was one of those “moments” that come along rarely, an opportunity to view life as it really is, right NOW, right here, in “this moment.” So I’d like to share it with you, since I’m fairly certain it will resonate for you in the same way it did for me. There’s really nothing I could add to this since her words are as if they were my own, words that describe how I view MY life today, after so many years of negative “self-talk”, “self-worth” … Continue reading

Facing Fear ~ The Hidden Enemy

ShareWho has not felt the cold clammy hand of fear grip one’s spirit and paralyze our actions mid step? Sometimes this happens right at the moment when we are on the very verge of accomplishing our greatest success! Foiled by the Enemy again! Fear defeats more people than any other one thing in the world. ~ Ralph Waldo Emerson Most of us are enslaved by some kind of fear or the other. Like many of you, I have encountered fear in many different forms. The fear of being stuck in a permanent cage, unable to fulfill my true potential, the fear of not living up to the expectations of the people who matter most to me, the fear of loss of my loved ones, the … Continue reading

HOPE

ShareYou may be feeling lost. You’re stuck. Hope, to you, is just a word that seems out of reach. But somewhere, on the other side of doubt and despair, lies a beautiful world filled with courage and faith. And where those exist, hope and love will surely follow. So don’t give up. The road may be long, and at times the obstacles seem overwhelming, but when you act and live with kindness and love towards yourself and others, GOOD things, all the best things in life will be yours. That’s a promise, a guarantee, and an absolutely universal truth. ~ Gusto And finally, a gentle reminder, you’ll always have a friend here, it’s about the people, it’s how we make each other FEEL.

It’s Not How They Die….It’s How They LIVED

ShareThe following article was shared with me via email by a friend of mine. It moved me much as it did for my friend, so I’m sharing it here with all of you. My opinion? If I would have had the opportunity to speak with my Mother before she died, I’m convinced it would have been about “family.” No more. No less. Because those are the ties that bind each of us, the bedrock upon which we build our lives thereafter, and all the relationships we develop, nurture, and enjoy during our time here on this planet. ~ Gusto Kerry Egan is a hospice chaplain in Massachusetts and the author of “Fumbling: A Pilgrimage Tale of Love, Grief, and Spiritual Renewal on the Camino de … Continue reading

The Joshua Tree – Part III – NEW Beginnings

ShareLess than 24 hours after leaving San Diego, bound for the desert to clear my head and reconnect with the inner spirit guiding me there, I awoke at 5:30 a.m. It was February 26th, 2012, exactly one year to the day when I’d done the same thing. (A recap of that story may be read by clicking > HERE.) The room I’d rented for the night at the Best Western in Yucca Valley, CA. was less than a half-hour drive back to Joshua Tree National Park. I didn’t have much time. The sun would be rising soon, so I loaded up on coffee, water, and a few things to eat. Batteries were fully charged on both my cell phone and my digital camera. It was … Continue reading

The Joshua Tree – Part II

ShareDisregarding my fatigue, “listening” to the silent voice inside that said “keep going”,  and seeing that the sun was about to set, I rushed into the Best Western where I was staying, quickly checked in, and asked the attendant if she had any brochures on Joshua Tree National Park. After all, I’d never been there and wanted to know more. Of course, she had oodles of information. To learn more yourself, Google anything associated with the Joshua Tree, or click this link from National Geographic. So off I went, camera in hand, fully stocked with plenty of water and snacks just in case. My destination would not have any services. No food. No water. No gas. Not even cell phone service. Entering the park, I … Continue reading

The Joshua Tree – Part I

ShareFriday, February 24th, 2012. Awoke at 5 a.m., the usual time. Walked outside to get the morning paper in the driveway. It was still dark and as I opened the gate, I heard him, softly cooing not far away in the quiet neighborhood where I lived. It was a Mourning Dove. For reasons unknown, it suddenly occurred to me, this was the same dove I’d been hearing the day before and the weeks before that. Every day. But why did I “hear” him today, and not all the others? As I went back inside, memories of my home state of Kansas came flooding back. Why? Because Mourning Doves are prevalent there. However, the last thing I expected was to hear one in San Diego, CA. … Continue reading

Failure Beats Never Trying

ShareA couple hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. Never leave that till tomorrow, he said, which you can do today. This is the man who discovered electricity. You think more people would listen to what he had to say. I don’t know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I’d have to say that it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, sometimes, the fear is just of making a decision, because what if you’re wrong? What if you’re making a mistake that you can’t undo? The early bird catches the worm. A stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can’t pretend we … Continue reading

You Know That Feeling….?

ShareYou know that feeling when you’re just waiting, waiting to get home into your room, close the door, fall into bed, and just let everything out that you kept in all day, that feeling of both relief and desperation? Nothing is wrong, but nothing is right either, and you’re tired, tired of everything, tired of nothing, and you just want someone to be there and tell you it’s okay, but no one’s going to be there, and you know you have to be strong for yourself, because no one can fix you. But you’re tired of waiting, tired of having to be the one to fix yourself and everyone else, tired of being strong, and for once, you just want it to be easy, to … Continue reading

Little Eyes See a Lot….

ShareWHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING A message every adult should read because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life. When you thought I wasn’t looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew that there is a God I … Continue reading

God’s Hands

ShareGod’s Hands Sometimes we must be hurt in order to grow, we must fail in order to know, we must lose in order to gain. Some lessons are learned best only through pain. Sometimes our vision clears only after our eyes are washed with tears. Sometimes we have to be broken so we can be tender; sick, so we can rest and think better on things more important than work or fun. Trip near death, so we can assess how we’ve ran. Sometimes we have to suffer lack so we can know God’s provisions, feel another’s pain, so we can have a sense of mission. So take heart my friend, If you don’t understand today, Instead of grumbling, ask God what He means to say. … Continue reading

~ Maya Angelou ~

ShareI’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I’ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you second chances. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I’ve learned that whenever I … Continue reading

Life Happens. Be a Part of It.

ShareIt seems that everything comes in a list format nowadays. “Wash, Rinse, and Repeat” or “Open box, Remove Contents, Try and Assemble”. Maybe it is because when we see things in a list format our brain interprets them as a set of instructions – rules that must be followed. The proliferation of articles, tips, and advice about happiness is astonishing. Everybody is coming up with the magic formula for finding happiness. I don’t know about you, but I need to keep things simple and in perspective at all times. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a simple set of instructions for living a happy and fulfilled life? How about an instruction manual for life? Something along the lines of “Enjoy childhood, Explore young adulthood, … Continue reading

Life is Simple

ShareLife is not complex. We are complex. Life is simple, and the simple thing is the right thing. ~ Oscar Wilde The problem isn’t that we have problems. The problem is we’ve become weak, and we make most of the problems ourselves. There are far too many people looking for someone or some “thing” to blame for their lot or stages in life. We’ve become a world consisting of a self-serving, hedonistic life-style that only breeds further contempt, shame, cynicism, and fear. Haters? Look…jealousy is simply the fear that you don’t have value. You need to find self-value. Love yourself or you won’t believe that you are loved. Stop looking at others to judge or attack, and look within yourself instead. Dig deep, find all … Continue reading

My Son

ShareThe ending will surprise you. A wealthy man and his son loved to collect rare works of art. They had everything in their collection, from Picasso to Raphael. They would often sit together and admire the great works of art. When the Vietnam conflict broke out, the son went to war. He was very courageous and died in battle while rescuing other soldiers. The father was notified and grieved deeply for his only son. About a month later, just before Christmas, there was a knock at the door. A young man stood at the door with a large package in his hands. He said, ‘Sir, you don’t know me, but I am the soldier for whom your son gave his life. He saved many lives … Continue reading

Welcome to the NEW Gusto Ramblings!

Gus Rowe

ShareHi! I’m excited to Welcome you to the NEW “Gusto Ramblings” website! Nearly 2 years ago, April 9th, 2010 to be exact, I awoke early one morning and a thought occurred to me; “You’ve got so much inside that you want to express, so many experiences you wish to share and the lessons you’ve gained from them, why not start your own website? A platform by which you might inspire others?” I had reached a point in my life that I knew I needed an outlet. Up until then, I was merely sharing some of my musings and thoughts on my personal Facebook page, a forum I had joined in early 2009, after suffering a rapid series of tragic events beginning in mid-2007 until June 2008. … Continue reading

~ “TEBOW” ~

Share He’s one of the most polarizing figures in America, a football player who shows no fear in professing his religious beliefs. But more on him in a moment. First, I want to share a story with you, one it is hoped you will see the connection between it and the other subject of this chapter when you’re finished reading. The message came through my cell phone on New Year’s Eve 2011 from a young lady in Indiana (the name will be Jane Doe for privacy reasons); “Gus, this is Jane. I apologize for intruding in your personal space. I’m in need of your home address. If you’re not comfortable giving it to me, I’ll understand. I just wasn’t sure if the address on your … Continue reading
