ShareYou may be feeling lost. You’re stuck. Hope, to you, is just a word that seems out of reach. But somewhere, on the other side of doubt and despair, lies a beautiful world filled with courage and faith. And where those exist, hope and love will surely follow. So don’t give up. The road may be long, and at times the obstacles seem overwhelming, but when you act and live with kindness and love towards yourself and others, GOOD things, all the best things in life will be yours. That’s a promise, a guarantee, and an absolutely universal truth. ~ Gusto And finally, a gentle reminder, you’ll always have a friend here, it’s about the people, it’s how we make each other FEEL.

“Hi Handsome….My name is Rose.”

ShareThe first day of school our professor introduced himself and challenged us to get to know someone we didn’t already know. I stood up to look around when a gentle hand touched my shoulder. I turned around to find a wrinkled, little old lady beaming up at me with a smile that lit up her entire being. She said, ‘Hi handsome. My name is Rose. I’m eighty-seven years old. Can I give you a hug?’ I laughed and enthusiastically responded; ‘Of course you may!’ and she gave me a giant squeeze. ‘Why are you in college at such a young, innocent age?’ I asked. She jokingly replied, ‘I’m here to meet a rich husband, get married, and have a couple of kids…’ ‘No seriously,’ I … Continue reading

“Gusto” Turns Two….The Journey Continues

ShareApril 9th, 2010. It’s 2:30 a.m. and I can’t sleep. I’ve been back in California less than a month, and already, life is changing rapidly. Recent events, some quite painful, are causing a major shift in my perspective. As I sit there alone in the darkness, something occurs in me that will change my life forever. Turning on the kitchen light, I sit down in front of my computer and start searching on the internet. For what, I’m not sure. But within moments, I soon find out. During this moment of despair and heartache, my mind takes me back to when I was a little boy growing up on a farm on the plains of Western Kansas. As the only boy out of 6 children … Continue reading

Struggles Make Us Stronger

ShareA man found a cocoon of a butterfly. One day a small opening appeared. He sat and watched the butterfly for several hours as it struggled to squeeze its body through the tiny hole. Then it stopped, as if it couldn’t go further. So the man decided to help the butterfly. He took a pair of scissors and snipped off the remaining bits of cocoon. The butterfly emerged easily but it had a swollen body and shriveled wings. The man continued to watch it, expecting that any minute the wings would enlarge and expand enough to support the body. Neither happened! In fact the butterfly spent the rest of its life crawling around. It was never able to fly. What the man in his kindness … Continue reading

Shattered Glass

ShareThe “past.” It always seems to never go away, does it? As hard as we try to forget certain events in our life, we’re never able to shake them. Nor should we even try. They’re an inevitable part of the make-up of who we are today. Good or bad, they’re with us forever. Acceptance of that truth is a key component to our emotional well-being. Last night I had a dream, or rather a nightmare of events that occurred about ten years ago. That was a time of self-indulgence, denial, anger, and chaos. Like most of us, I immediately woke up, startled by how vivid the nightmare was, secretly hoping when I went back to sleep, it wouldn’t continue. But it did. So I woke … Continue reading

Why Do We Struggle?

ShareWhy do some of us seem afflicted with nothing but pain and hardship in life while others seem to be on easy street? Why do some of us struggle with life issues while others seem to always find a way to keep moving forward in a positive light? I’ve written here before about a topic and phrase entitled “acceptance is the answer.” Some of you reading this know the source from which that phrase originated. And though some may believe it’s designed only for those who are following diligent “steps” in their path of self-recovery, I’ve maintained for some time that phrase applies to all of us, regardless of our particular circumstances or misfortunes. That book is about life. “Acceptance is the answer to all … Continue reading

“10 Rules for Being Human” ~ Cherie Carter-Scott

Share“Ten Rules for Being Human” ~ by Cherie Carter-Scott All of these are important, but #8 and #9 may the the most important of all. Life is like water, there’s an ebb and flow feel to it; nothing stays the same, everything changes, but it’s our choices that decide whether we’re the “cause” of our world or the “effect.” Be the rock. Stand by your beliefs. Don’t compromise your values. BE the change you wish to see in the world. The power lies from within. ~ Gusto 1. You will receive a body. You may like it or hate it, but it’s yours to keep for the entire period. 2. You will learn lessons. You are enrolled in a full-time informal school called, “life.” 3. … Continue reading

Life Lessons to Remember

ShareIn life we do things. Some we wish we had never done. Some we wish we could replay a million times in our heads. But they all make us who we are, and in the end they shape every detail about us. If we were to reverse any of them we wouldn’t be the person we are. So just live, make mistakes, have wonderful memories, but never ever second guess who you are, where you have been, and most importantly where it is you’re going. People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered. Love them anyway. If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Do good anyway. If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies. Succeed anyway. The good … Continue reading

The Joshua Tree – Part II

ShareDisregarding my fatigue, “listening” to the silent voice inside that said “keep going”,  and seeing that the sun was about to set, I rushed into the Best Western where I was staying, quickly checked in, and asked the attendant if she had any brochures on Joshua Tree National Park. After all, I’d never been there and wanted to know more. Of course, she had oodles of information. To learn more yourself, Google anything associated with the Joshua Tree, or click this link from National Geographic. So off I went, camera in hand, fully stocked with plenty of water and snacks just in case. My destination would not have any services. No food. No water. No gas. Not even cell phone service. Entering the park, I … Continue reading

The Joshua Tree – Part I

ShareFriday, February 24th, 2012. Awoke at 5 a.m., the usual time. Walked outside to get the morning paper in the driveway. It was still dark and as I opened the gate, I heard him, softly cooing not far away in the quiet neighborhood where I lived. It was a Mourning Dove. For reasons unknown, it suddenly occurred to me, this was the same dove I’d been hearing the day before and the weeks before that. Every day. But why did I “hear” him today, and not all the others? As I went back inside, memories of my home state of Kansas came flooding back. Why? Because Mourning Doves are prevalent there. However, the last thing I expected was to hear one in San Diego, CA. … Continue reading

10 New Ways of Living

Share1. Stop taking so much notice of how you feel. How you feel is how you feel. It’ll pass soon. What you’re thinking is what you’re thinking. It’ll go too. Tell yourself that whatever you feel, you feel; whatever you think, you think. Since you can’t stop yourself thinking, or prevent emotions from arising in your mind, it makes no sense to be proud or ashamed of either. You didn’t cause them. Only your actions are directly under your control. They’re the only proper cause of pleasure or shame. 2. Let go of worrying. It often makes things worse. The more you think about something bad, the more likely it is to happen. When you’re hair-trigger primed to notice the first sign of trouble, you’ll surely … Continue reading

Failure Beats Never Trying

ShareA couple hundred years ago, Benjamin Franklin shared with the world the secret of his success. Never leave that till tomorrow, he said, which you can do today. This is the man who discovered electricity. You think more people would listen to what he had to say. I don’t know why we put things off, but if I had to guess, I’d have to say that it has a lot to do with fear. Fear of failure, fear of rejection, sometimes, the fear is just of making a decision, because what if you’re wrong? What if you’re making a mistake that you can’t undo? The early bird catches the worm. A stitch in time saves nine. He who hesitates is lost. We can’t pretend we … Continue reading

You Know That Feeling….?

ShareYou know that feeling when you’re just waiting, waiting to get home into your room, close the door, fall into bed, and just let everything out that you kept in all day, that feeling of both relief and desperation? Nothing is wrong, but nothing is right either, and you’re tired, tired of everything, tired of nothing, and you just want someone to be there and tell you it’s okay, but no one’s going to be there, and you know you have to be strong for yourself, because no one can fix you. But you’re tired of waiting, tired of having to be the one to fix yourself and everyone else, tired of being strong, and for once, you just want it to be easy, to … Continue reading

The Little Boy with a Bad Temper…

ShareThere was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him to hammer a nail in the back fence every time he lost his temper. The first day the boy drove thirty-seven nails into the fence, and then it gradually dwindled down. He discovered that it was easier to control his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally, the day came when the boy did not lose his temper at all. He told his father about it, and his father suggested that he now pull out one nail for each day that he controlled his temper. The days passed, and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that the nails … Continue reading

Time Management

ShareTime management. Many of us hurry through life going from one place to the next, focused on conquering the next mountain, making the next deal, running the next errand, and believing we will never have enough time to do all the things we need to get done. There’s all the time in the world once we realize we’re creators of this life we choose. Life is a series of choices and freedom from stress is one of those choices. If your life is overly complicated, it’s because you have chosen this current system of chaos. The world is a tantalizing swirl of getting the next “fix,” tempting us to fit more and more things, people and processes into our lives. And because we are so … Continue reading

Little Eyes See a Lot….

ShareWHEN YOU THOUGHT I WASN’T LOOKING A message every adult should read because children are watching you and doing as you do, not as you say. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you hang my first painting on the refrigerator, and I immediately wanted to paint another one. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you feed a stray cat, and I learned that it was good to be kind to animals. When you thought I wasn’t looking I saw you make my favorite cake for me, and I learned that the little things can be the special things in life. When you thought I wasn’t looking I heard you say a prayer, and I knew that there is a God I … Continue reading

God’s Hands

ShareGod’s Hands Sometimes we must be hurt in order to grow, we must fail in order to know, we must lose in order to gain. Some lessons are learned best only through pain. Sometimes our vision clears only after our eyes are washed with tears. Sometimes we have to be broken so we can be tender; sick, so we can rest and think better on things more important than work or fun. Trip near death, so we can assess how we’ve ran. Sometimes we have to suffer lack so we can know God’s provisions, feel another’s pain, so we can have a sense of mission. So take heart my friend, If you don’t understand today, Instead of grumbling, ask God what He means to say. … Continue reading

~ Maya Angelou ~

ShareI’ve learned that no matter what happens, or how bad it seems today, life does go on, and it will be better tomorrow. I’ve learned that you can tell a lot about a person by the way he/she handles these three things: a rainy day, lost luggage, and tangled Christmas tree lights. I’ve learned that regardless of your relationship with your parents, you’ll miss them when they’re gone from your life. I’ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life. I’ve learned that life sometimes gives you second chances. I’ve learned that you shouldn’t go through life with a catcher’s mitt on both hands; you need to be able to throw some things back. I’ve learned that whenever I … Continue reading

How Do You Talk to Yourself?

ShareOur thoughts, our dreams, our feelings, our ideas….they all have physical POWER. When we say “I WANT”, whether it’s spiritual growth, improvements in our relationships, our  jobs, our finances, our health, ANYTHING, it has more impact on what “happens” in our lives than we might realize. Make a choice. Decide. The world and everything in it, all your hopes, dreams, and aspirations can and will become a reality. ~ Gusto  How Do You Talk To Yourself? A man and his small son were out walking through the mountains and at one point, the little boy slipped 20-30 yards down the mountain side. Finally he was able to grab onto a tree branch and hold on, then he screamed out, “Help me!” This voice boomed back, … Continue reading

Life Happens. Be a Part of It.

ShareIt seems that everything comes in a list format nowadays. “Wash, Rinse, and Repeat” or “Open box, Remove Contents, Try and Assemble”. Maybe it is because when we see things in a list format our brain interprets them as a set of instructions – rules that must be followed. The proliferation of articles, tips, and advice about happiness is astonishing. Everybody is coming up with the magic formula for finding happiness. I don’t know about you, but I need to keep things simple and in perspective at all times. Wouldn’t it be great if there were a simple set of instructions for living a happy and fulfilled life? How about an instruction manual for life? Something along the lines of “Enjoy childhood, Explore young adulthood, … Continue reading

The Trouble Tree

SharePlant a Trouble Tree We all have storms come through our lives, but one thing is for sure—we have no right to make everyone else miserable with our own unhappiness. No need to rain on others’ parades. A simple story illustrates my point: The Trouble Tree The carpenter I hired to help me restore an old farmhouse had just finished a rough first day on the job. A flat tire made him lose an hour of work, his electric saw quit, and now his ancient pickup truck refused to start. While I drove him home, he sat in stony silence. On arriving, he invited me in to meet his family. As we walked toward the front door, he paused briefly at a small tree, touching … Continue reading

A True Story!!

ShareA DREAMER AND HIS DREAM Let me tell you, Jesse hated this job. And you would too I imagine, if you had to do it. Jesse was a chicken plucker. That’s right. He stood on a line in a chicken factory and spent his days pulling the feathers off dead chickens so the rest of us wouldn’t have to. It wasn’t much of a job. But at the time, Jesse didn’t think he was much of a person. His father was a brute of a man. His dad was actually thought to be mentally ill and treated Jesse rough all of his life.Jesse’s older brother wasn’t much better. He was always picking on Jesse and beating him up. Yes, Jesse grew up in a very … Continue reading
